The Council is the governing body of ICE. The members of Council are the trustees of the Institution, and are responsible for directing its affairs, and ensuring that it is properly managed and delivering the object for which it is established under the Royal Charter. Council members, who are drawn from all grades of the membership from Graduate to Fellow, are elected in a yearly postal ballot. Meetings of the Council are chaired by the President.
Council currently meets five times a year to debate the strategic policy of the Institution in matters of education, training, qualification and knowledge management in the field of civil engineering. Detailed business is delegated to the Executive Board which is chaired by the Senior Vice-President, and comprises the President, Vice-Presidents, 5 elected members of Council, and the Chairman of Thomas Telford Ltd.
Members who are willing to devote some of their time to assist in the important task of governing their Institution are encouraged to stand for election to the Council. Approximately one third of seats become available each year as individual members complete their terms of service.
