Brian Murkin was educated at The Broxbourne School, and then read Mathematics at Imperial College, London for his Bachelor of Science degree and Associateship of the Royal College of Science. He started his career with Peat Marwick, qualifying as a chartered accountant in 1978. He then spent 14 years with Nationwide Building Society, rising through a succession of finance and management roles to become General Manager (Finance) in 1988, where he was responsible for all aspects of Accounting and Management Information. The period was one of significant change for the Nationwide as the scope and sophistication of its operations expanded to embrace its merger with the Anglia Building Society, the introduction of current account banking and the acquisition of estate agencies.
This was followed by three years in a similar role with the listed Paragon Group of Companies PLC, specialists in securitisation and consumer finance. From 1996, Brian was the Director of Finance and Management Services at the Institute of Directors, where his responsibilities included both IT and the expansion and development of their extensive landmark facilities in Pall Mall.
In joining the ICE, Brian is keen to bring his commercial experience to the senior management team, adding a further "business like" approach in the drive to deliver the recently agreed business plan.
Brian is married with two children who both show signs of being budding scientists. He and his wife Diana are keen ramblers and hill walkers and enjoy visiting countryside and heritage attractions both at home and abroad. Classical music, both live and recorded, is another of Brian's passions, although his violin playing now is strictly for his ears only. |
