Stuart Crichton joined ICE in 1971 as a student member whilst sponsored by George Wimpey, at that time the largest Civil Engineering contractor in the Commonwealth, for a BSc in Civil Engineering at City University, and an MSc in Steel Structures at Imperial College. After becoming a Chartered Engineer in 1976 his career focused on marine structures, first working with John Brown on the design of North Sea offshore platforms. He was then recruited as part of a small team to set up a new office for Foster Wheeler in Rome, heading up the civil engineering team, working on marine projects in the Mediterranean and Middle East before rejoining John Brown leading a design team in Damman, Saudi Arabia.
After a short spell with Arup´s London office Stuart spent a year on the Sloan programme at London Business School. On completion he joined a listed international printing and publishing group as a corporate planner working on strategy and acquisitions, leaving as Divisional Business Development Director. In 1989 Stuart joined RIBA Companies, the commercial arm of the Royal Institute of British Architects, as Chief Executive with a mandate to restructure the company and increase profits.
He joined ICE in a new role as Head of Areas in April 2004 with responsibility for implementing the Regionalisation programme, and for improving services for UK Regions and International members. In October 2006 he was promoted to Director UK Regions and International and has been working with Vice-President Richard Coackley to develop and implement the new ICE International strategy, with its increasing focus on International Development activities.
Stuart is married and lives in Richmond, Surrey. His interests include modern art and gardening.
