A civil engineering project can take years to complete and is usually undertaken by a project team made up of many different types of professionals. The design team involves project managers, architects and a wide range of engineers covering disciplines such as structural, civil, building services, fire and transport. Each engineer will have a particular role to play in the project but the team must work together to successfully deliver the project to the client.

The Daegu football stadium in South Korea and Chelsea football club's Stamford Bridge home would have been researched, designed, and built in this way.

A typical project can be divided into four sections - see diagram.
