Name Caterina Walsh
My job is Gateshead, Tyne & Wear
Home is In a flat in Putney with two other girls my age.
School days I had wanted an Astronaut and then a Vet, not necessarily in that order. Then I became interested in civil engineering when I researched Bridges for a GCSE Technology Project. I was very impressed that people could make these vast structures stand.
I did Physics, Maths and Chemistry A-levels and then a Civil Engineering degree at Newcastle University. Meeting people with a shared interest in engineering was invaluable. We were able to help each other to complete coursework and revise for exams. At weekends I could be found in caves in the Yorkshire Dales or on the dance floor of a club!
The journey so far After University I joined Volker Stevin Ltd (formerly called Harbour & General Works Ltd). My first work placement was on a construction site in Carlisle. We built a water treatment works with the capacity to supply water to the whole of Carlisle. It was great being a member of a team that achieved this.
A day in the life As part of my training, I am now at a placement in my company's Design Office in Gateshead. I get to find out about all the projects my company is involved in up and down the country. The variety of work makes my job interesting.
I work with Nights out in Carlisle with the site staff, with the company credit card behind the bar, were always good fun! They took me out for my birthday on a disco bus with a bar, flashing lights, sofas and a sound system.
The best thing The best things about being a Civil Engineer are: Being involved in a variety of projects; The opportunity to work outside - not just in front of a computer; The friends I've made because Engineers work alongside people in other companies all the time Impressing people by telling them I am a Civil Engineer!
My social time Working is not as bad as you might think. I don't like 7am starts, but my wages come in every month so I can splash out on holidays and weekends away.
My travels Since starting work I've been away to Italy and Spain hiking and climbing, on trips to Scotland and spent nearly every other weekend in Wales, the Lakes, the Dales or seeing friends in other cities.
I recommend Civil Engineering to If you've been thinking about a career as an Astronaut or Vet you might also try considering a career as a Civil Engineer! You won't be disappointed! |
