Fellow

Fellow is the highest grade of membership of the Institution. It may be awarded if you are or have been engaged in a position of responsibility in the promotion, planning, design, construction, maintenance or management of important engineering work.

Benefits of becoming a Fellow

The benefits you gain from becoming a Fellow remain the same as professionally qualified members. As a Fellow, however, you are distinguished by the entitlement to use the letters FICE after your name.

Becoming a Fellow (FICE) entitles you to a wide range of benefits to support you in your civil engineering career.

Route to becoming a Fellow

There are two routes to becoming a Fellow of the ICE (FICE):

1. Transfer

If you are a Member, Associate Member or Technician Member of the Institution you may apply to transfer to the class of Fellow when you are or have been engaged in a position of significant responsibility in the civil engineering profession.

2. Direct admission

If you are not a Member of the Institution but have made a significant contribution to the civil engineering profession or are engaged in a position of responsibility, you may apply for direct admission to the class of Fellow.

If you are not already registered with the Engineering Council and you would like to attain the qualification of Chartered / Incorporated Engineer or Engineering Technician, as well as Fellow, you must possess the required educational base as well as experience in a position of responsibility.

You will be required to attend an interview (please see Appendix D of ICE 3007A).

Please note: Applicants who do not require registration with the Engineering Council should still expect to attend an interview. This will be determined when the application is assessed by the ICE Fellowship Panel.

Initial Inquiries

If you would like the Institution to assess your suitability for Fellowship you should first contact your Regional Support Team if you reside in the UK or Hong Kong (see ICE near you for contact details) or the Fellowship Executive for advice (see below for contact details). The Fellowship Panel can also give advice on whether you should consider making an application. For the Panel to make that preliminary assessment, made without prejudice, you need to submit an up-to-date CV which gives details of your current and/or past responsibilities. See ICE 3007a - Appendix B for further guidance.

Fees for Fellowship

  • A non-refundable Fellowship application fee must be submitted with your application. Please note there are different application fees for Transfer and Direct Admission.
  • On admission as a Fellow, you must pay an ICE entrance fee(unless you are an ICE Member, Associate Member, Technician Member, or Graduate member of at least 2 year’s standing), and an annual subscription fee to maintain your membership.
  • Members transferring to Fellow will not need to pay the entrance fee.
