Joining as a Graduate member of ICE is the ideal step to becoming a professionally qualified civil engineer.
Can I become a Graduate member?
You may apply to become a Graduate member of ICE if you hold an academic qualification that meets the educational base for one of our professionally qualified grades of membership.
You can also join as a Graduate member, and enjoy the benefits offered, if you are pursuing a postgraduate course of study. A concessionary rate subscription fee (please refer to the fees table) is available if this applies to you, subject to you providing proof from your university of the full time nature of your course.
What if I am not eligible?
If your qualification is not available in our course search facility, or is not recognised by the ICE as meeting the minimum educational base requirements for membership, you may need to apply for academic assessment to become a Graduate member. If this is the case and you begin an online Graduate membership application the system will automatically direct you towards the Academic Assessment route when you provide your course details.
How much does it cost?
The annual subscription fee for Graduate membership must be submitted as part of your application. If you are eligible to apply for a concessionary rate, this will be applied as part of the application process. Refer to the fees page for information on all fees.
How do I apply?
If you meet the eligibility criteria for Graduate membership, whereby your academic qualification satisfies the required educational base, you can make an application online.

What happens next?
Once you are admitted as a Graduate member, you should consider starting your Initial Professional Development (IPD) - which is an integral step towards Professional qualification.
When applying to become a Graduate member, you may already be part of a Company Approved Training Scheme (CATS) with your employer. If this scheme is approved by ICE and is administered online, you can register your Training Agreement (TA) as part of the Graduate application process. Please speak to your employer before including this in your application, so they are ready to process the request.
If you are unable to enter into a TA, you may follow a self managed option for which you would apply to have your experience assessed through an ICE Career Appraisal, details of which are presented within MGN 11.
