ICE is a global institution and therefore welcomes applicants from all over the world. Qualifying for Membership requires the successful achievement of three stages.
The standard route for those candidates who possess an accredited qualification is:
An accredited course is one that has been assessed as having satisfied all or part of the required educational base. This includes qualifications accredited within the FEANI Index, Washington, Sydney and Dublin Accords, which provide for the mutual recognition of engineering degree courses between signatory countries. To enquire if your qualification is accredited please consult our Course Search, making sure you have the relevant details including the title of your qualification(s), awarding institution(s) and dates of study.
ICE welcomes applications for membership from those who have not followed the standard route. Candidates who have undertaken academic study outside the UK leading to a non-accredited qualification will need to take the following route:
(a) This process applies if your course is not accredited but would like to gain membership of ICE with EC(UK) registration in the future. If this is the case you would be required to make an application for an Academic Assessment. However if your aim is only to gain membership of ICE and you hold a UK Bachelors degree or equivalent in any subject, you can progress to the next stage without having to apply for an academic assessment.
(b) This process applies if you have not completed an ICE/HKIE Training Scheme. You are required to make an application for a Career Appraisal.
The outcome of the procedures (a) and (b) above will EITHER indicate satisfactory progression to the next stage OR will give advice on any further study or training required.
To apply please consult the relevant documents as follows:
Other Routes:
- Mutual Exemption Agreements – For professionally qualified civil engineers and technicians who are full members of selected overseas professional institutions.
- European Diplomate Route – for those professionally qualified engineers and technicians from within the EU.
- Technical Report Route – for those who either have no formal academic qualifications, or whose qualifications do not fully meet the requirement for MICE.
A common feature of all of the routes to membership are the ICE Development Objectives, achievement of which candidates are expected to demonstrate before being eligible to proceed to Professional Review.
