Accreditation

The Educational Base can be satisfied by one, or a combination, of the ways outlined in more detail below.

UK Accredited Course
An accredited course is one that is deemed to have satisfied all or part one of the educational base required for a particular grade of membership with EC(UK) registration.  Certain courses may require Further Learning  to fulfill part 2 of the educational base requirements for a particular grade of membership.

International Accredited Course
The Institution via the Engineering Council (UK) (ECUK) is signatory to a number of agreements regarding the accreditation of international courses.

  • Specific agreements with non-UK universities/colleges
  • European agreement - European Federation of National Engineering Associations - FEANI
  • International Agreements

These are agreements between the bodies responsible for accrediting professional engineering degree programs in each of the signatory countries. They recognise the substantial equivalency of programs accredited by those bodies, and recommend that graduates of accredited programs in any of the signatory countries be recognised by the other countries as having met the academic requirements for entry to the practice of engineering. These agreements are:

For information about which countries are included in each of the agreements, please click on one of the above links.

Academic Assessment of non-accredited courses
If you do not hold an engineering qualification which is accredited with ICE, you would need to apply for an  Academic Assessment, whereby your qualifications will be assessed on an individual case basis by the Academic Qualifications Panel. The Academic Assessment will determine what grade of membership (Engineering Technician, Incorporated or Chartered) your academic base fulfils and advise of any 'top-ups' required. After successful completion of this Assessment you would be admitted as a  Graduate Member of ICE at the appropriate grade. For further information on making an application please see:

Further Learning
Graduates whose academic qualifications only satisfy Part 1 of the Educational Base can satisfy Part 2 through Further Learning via one of the following means:

  • Full or part-time postgraduate courses
  • A suitable employer-led learning programme

For example, in order to meet the academic requirements for:

  • Chartered/Incorporated Engineer. E.g. A BEng(Hons) degree would meet the academic requirement for IEng but would require Further Learning to meet the requirement for CEng
  • An HND would meet the academic requirement for EngTech but would require Further Learning to meet the requirement for IEng

Additional information on Further Learning (Part 2 Educational Base) can be found on the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) website.
