The Engineering Council (UK)(ECUK) regulates the engineering profession through engineering institutions (Licensed Members). As a Licensed Member, ICE is licensed to put suitably qualified members on the ECUK's Register of Engineers as:
CEng - Chartered Engineer
IEng - Incorporated Engineer
EngTech - Engineering Technician
These titles are protected and controlled by the Engineering Council's Royal Charter and may only be used by registrants. Therefore, to qualify as a Chartered Engineer, Incorporated Engineer or Engineering Technician you must satisfy the appropriate membership requirements of one of the licensed Institutions.
The EC(UK) sets the current Standards for Registration which form the basis for all routes to professional qualifications.
UK-SPEC On 1st December 2003, EC(UK) launched the UK Standards for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC). UK-SPEC defines the current standards for registration for each of the above qualifications and so are used by ICE for defining the minimum standards for professionally qualified membership.
Prior to December 2003, EC(UK) 'Standards and Routes to Registration' (SARTOR) was the basis for the standards that were applied. EC(UK)'s standards have retrospective compatibility to ensure that no person is disadvantaged by their introduction. Hence SARTOR may apply to those currently holding qualifications and those already en-route to membership.
