Initial Professional Development (IPD) is the stage in your career where you develop the special skills and acquire the specialist knowledge and competence needed to practice as a civil engineer or technician. It bridges the gap between your educational base and your professional qualification. Acquiring learning and experience at work will develop your ability to hold positions of responsibility and make independent judgements. IPD also encompasses the achievement of Continuing Professional Development.
The first part of your IPD should be structured to give you the necessary breadth of experience, as defined in the ICE Development Objectives. The second part should be a gradual progression (dependent on your personal development and commitment) towards increasing responsibility. This part should also provide time for consolidation of your experience and for preparation for the Professional Review. The two parts may be concurrent or consecutive.

If you are a new graduate or just starting a new job with a new organisation, ICE recommends you join an ICE Approved Training Scheme. It guarantees a committment to mentoring by your employer, and provides a structured approach to meeting the requirements of the ICE Development Objectives.
