Agreements with other Institutions

The ICE welcomes applications for membership from those who are associated with or working in the built environment and who are professionally qualified with another professional institution. There are exemption routes that apply with the following. Please consult Individual Routes to Membership for further information.

UK Institutions

Members of other UK professional institutions may be eligible to join the Institution via the Engineering Council Organisations (ECO) route.

European Directive 2005/36/EC

EU nationals who are legally established to practise as a civil engineer in another EU Member State may be eligible to apply to ICE via the European Directive Route. The profession of civil engineer is not regulated in the UK, and so it is not necessary to be registered with ICE in order to practise as a civil engineer in the UK. However, the protected titles of EngTech TMICE, IEng MICE and CEng MICE are regulated for the purposes of the Directive.

Please see European Directive route for more information.

Institutions outside the EU

Members of certain professional institutions may be eligible to join the Institution via a Mutual Exemption Agreement (MEA).

ICES Members

Members of the Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors may be eligible to join the Institution via an ICES Exemption Agreement.

European Engineer (EUR ING) status

Members of ICE with a combination of educational qualifications and additional period of professional experience totalling seven years from the beginning of their higher education may apply for the title European Engineer (EUR ING) and be entered on the FEANI Register. The Engineering Council and FEANI websites provide detailed guidance about EUR ING. For more information about applying for EUR ING status with ICE please contact the Membership Department.

Please note that this title is not regarded as a regulated professional qualification for the purposes of Directive 2005/36/EC outlined above.
