The ICE welcomes applications for membership from those who are associated with or working in the built environment and who are professionally qualified with another professional institution. There are exemption routes that apply with the following. Please consult Individual Routes to Membership for further information.
An individual who is an EU national and already professionally qualified as a civil engineer in another EU Member State may be eligible to apply to ICE via the European Diplomate Route. The profession of civil engineer is not regulated in the UK, and so it is not necessary to be registered with ICE in order to practise as a civil engineer in the UK. However, the protected titles of EngTech TMICE, IEng MICE and CEng MICE are regulated for the purposes of the Directive.
All applications for membership (excluding European Diplomate Route) must be supported by 3 sponsors.

Must be:

Sponsor 2*

Member of an EC(UK) Licensed Professional Institution (PI)

*Please Note: All sponsors must be in at least the same grade, or equivalent, of membership. Failure to provide adequate sponsor questionnaires can result in delays to the processing of your application.
Members of ICE with a combination of educational qualifications and additional period of professional experience totalling seven years from the beginning of their higher education may apply for the title European Engineer (EUR ING) and be entered on the FEANI Register. The Engineering Council UK and FEANI websites provide detailed guidance about EUR ING. For more information about applying for EUR ING status with ICE please contact the Membership Department.
Please note that this title is not regarded as a regulated professional qualification for the purposes of Directive 2005/36/EC outlined above.
