Routes to Fellowship

Applications for the class of Fellow are considered by ICE´s Fellowship Panel. The two main routes to fellowship are:

Transfer
If you are a Member, Associate Member or Technician Member of the Institution you may apply to transfer to the class of Fellow when you consider that you are or have been engaged in a position of significant responsibility in the civil engineering profession.

Direct Admission
If you are not a Member of the Institution but have made a significant contribution to the civil engineering profession, you may apply for direct admission to the class of Fellow.

To apply by either route, you are able to make an application online. Please see below for the list of documentation you are required to submit with your application. Please ensure you have your documentation ready before you commence - Documentation Checklist

Document
A detailed CV
An organisational chart showing your current position within your organisation indicating to whom you are responsible, and who you are responsible for
A record of your Continuing Professional Development (CPD) showing at least 5 days CPD per year over the last 5 years
3 x Fellow Sponsor Questionnaires*
An application fee
Direct Admission applicants should also submit:
2000 word project report in which you played a prominent role
*To be submitted by applicant or subsequently by sponsor

Additionally if you are not registered as a Chartered Engineer (CEng) or Incorporated Engineer (IEng) with the Engineering Council this can also be achieved by attending an interview. This will consist of:

  • 15 min. presentation of the report
  • 60 min. discussion of your experience and position in comparison with the Professional characteristics of a Chartered or Incorporated Engineer

Following a successful interview you will be awarded CEng FICE or IEng FICE.

Please note: Applicants who do not require registration with the Engineering Council as a Chartered or Incorporated Engineer should still expect to attend an interview. This will be determined when the Fellowship Panel meet to review the application.

Non UK Applicants

International Applicants should apply in the same way as UK Applicants, through whichever route that is applicable (Transfer or Direct Admission). However you may wish to consult your regional ICE representative for advice before applying, especially if seeking sponsors.
