The British Geotechnical Association (BGA) is the principal society serving the needs of geotechnical engineers in the UK. It was created partly to provide a co-ordinating role in the UK with the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE) and continues to serve as the UK's Member Society, together with the International Society of Rock Mechanics (ISRM).
The overall objective of the Society, as defined in the Statutes is "…the advancement of public education in the subject of rock mechanics and engineering geology and in their application to engineering".
The Association arranges an annual programme of eight informal discussions, the organisation of the annual Rankine Lecture, the Cooling Prize Competition and the award of its own BGA prize for the best paper published by a BGA member. The BGA touring lecture, which is delivered by a prominent geotechnical specialist, takes place at three different venues around the UK. The Committee is particularly concerned to give members the opportunity to hear about and debate as wide a range as possible of topical and important subjects.
The BGA maintains very close links with the Geotechnique, the leading publication on the subject of geotechnical engineering. Ground Engineering is the magazine of the BGA, and all members receive the publication as part of membership.
BGA membership, now over 1400, is open to those individuals professionally engaged or otherwise actively interested in work lying within the field of Geotechnics. Membership is also open to all firms, who are each entitled to nominate two persons as members.
Members may also subscribe to receive copies of Geotechnique, the ICE Proceedings and Geotechnical Engineering. For further information of the special rates for BGA and to obtain a membership form, please contact Jade Donovan at ICE on + 020 7665 2233, or visit the British Geotechnical Association website.
