The British Hydrological Society (BHS) was formed in 1983 in response to a recognised need for a new broadly based national society "to promote interest and scholarship in both the scientific and applied aspects of hydrology and to foster involvement of its members in international activities".
Membership, currently over 900, is open to all individuals who are actively interested in hydrology. The Society is a registered charity run by an elected committee solely for the benefit of its members. It is an independent body but is formally associated with the Institution of Civil Engineers and the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology in recognition of their special role in hydrology so that it can better serve the applied and scientific interests of its members.
BHS has links with the International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS) through the UK IAHS Sub-Committee of BHS and the Royal Society. Links are also maintained with the Hydrological Sciences Section of the European Geosciences Union (EGU) and other national hydrological societies world-wide.
The principal activities of BHS are:
- holding regular national and regional meetings providing an open forum for the presentation and discussion of important current issues, studies, new developments and research and for the exchange of news and views.
- collaboration with other UK organisations active in related subjects and promotion of joint meetings.
- maintaining links with other international hydrological organisations.
- publication of a quarterly newsletter, Circulation, to keep members informed of British hydrological activities.
- producing other publications such as a Register of Consultants in Hydrology, proceedings from conferences and other Occasional Papers.
