The British Tunnelling Society (BTS)
The British Tunnelling Society (BTS)is a Learned Society whose aim is to "advance the education of the public in and to promote the art and science of tunnelling, including the creation and use of underground space, by fostering understanding, experience, interest and research" in tunnelling.
The BTS is one of the most active societies at the ICE and was officially constituted in February 1971. It has a total of approximately 800 individual and corporate members.
BTS is the national representative organisation in the International Tunnelling Association (ITA), in the formation of which it played a major part. BTS hold 10 discussion meetings a year on various aspects of tunnelling and regularly attracts the largest audiences for meetings held at the Institution. Larger scale conferences, courses, seminars and visits to various tunnelling projects are arranged separately. The BTS holds a very popular annual dinner.
