PIANC was founded in 1885 to promote development in the design, construction, improvement, maintenance and operation of inland and maritime waterways, ports, harbours and coastal zones world wide.
The international secretariat of PIANC is based in Brussels and National Sections exist in many countries. PIANC is sponsored by Government and can demonstrate an enviable record of achievement during its existence. The secretariat of the British Section is based at the ICE.
PIANC publishes a Bulletin on a quarterly basis and reports prepared by its international working groups. Recent subjects have dealt with handling and treatment of contaminated dredged material and criteria for movement of moored ships in harbours. Members are entitled to receive the Bulletin and reports free of charge.
PIANC international has official observer status at meetings of major international organisations, for example the International Maritime Organisation and the London Convention 1972. It organises Congresses on a four yearly basis. These provide excellent opportunities for members to exchange knowledge and develop long lasting friendships. Members are entitled to attend these events at a reduced rate.
The British Section is a major participant in the affairs of PIANC international and organises national activities. These include an annual Technical and Social Weekend, a Young Engineers Exchange Programme (with other PIANC member countries) and an essay competition for under 35s, known as the Gustave Willems Award. An international competition is also held. For further details of the PIANC British Section, visit www.pianc.org.uk
