Specialist interest

Civil Engineering today covers a diverse range of specialist areas.

In this section you can read more about the specialisms that make up the modern civil engineering profession, and obtain job-useful information.

ICE´s Engineering Boards represent different areas of specialist interest. The Boards build and distribute knowledge about engineering and promote the reputation and authority of the Institution, its members and the industry. They also promote the role of civil engineering in sustainable development. Professor Quentin Leiper prepared this diagram  to illustrate ICE's engineering knowledge outputs and services.

What do the boards do?

The Boards undertake any activity necessary to fulfill the Institution's role as a learned society to capture and disseminate knowledge. They do this through:

  • The publication of papers, guides, reports and briefing sheets
  • Running events and competitions
  • Awarding prizes
  • Managing collaborative research projects
  • Organising ICE´s prestige lectures
  • Responding to public consultation papers

Many of these outputs are made available in the downloads section in each specialism. You can also view news, press releases and events for each area and see the latest books and journals.

Navigate your way to the specialisms that interest using you using the list to your left.
