Thomas Telford’s London bridge design.

Telfords 180m single arch proposal for the 1799 competition to design a replacement for the Medieval London Bridge. The design was not adopted due to the amount of land required for the approaches. A new bridge, designed by John Rennie, and completed by his son, was built in 1824-31. You can see this engraving and many of Telford’s books, notebooks, drawings and his drawing instruments at `Continuing Telford's Vision’ Exhibition, Guildhall Art Gallery from 20 July – 2 September (entrance £2-50)

SS Great Eastern was the largest ship in the world when launched

Designed by Samuel Brown the pier was destroyed in a storm in 1890 after c. 60 years service

Britannia Tubular Bridge over the Menai Straits - 1849

This bridge excited the attention of the world engineering community unlike any structure of its time.While criticism was levelled at its uneconomic use of material compared with various truss designs, the intellectual effort involved in its design and construction was, and remains, a source of wonder.

Burma Railways, Mu Valley line - 1947

Bridge no. 225: launching 100ft span with Callendar-Hamilton launching nose. Image taken from 'Burma Railways, Narrative report on the reconstruction of bridges for the year 1947/8' [ICE Acc. 1282/04].

The Burma railway bridges are currently being structurally assessed.

Cable laying machinery on the Great Eastern - 1867

Although commercially unsuccesful as a passenger liner and cargo ship, the Great Eastern proved ideal for laying telegraph cables

Centring for the Pont de la Concorde - 1756

This great masonry bridge was designed by Perronnet, who established the first Civil Engineering School in Paris in 1747.
