Working on behalf of the Institution membership in the specialist discipline of structures and buildings: to develop, promote and disseminate best practice; to influence Governmental, legislative and industrial policy; to provide practical advice and guidance and to respond to issues of the day.

Forward plan
- Provide authoritative leadership in developing and delivering a coordinated strategy for the National implementation of the Structural Eurocodes and to assist in meeting the needs of members for support in the application of Eurocodes in practice
- Promote and support the principal recommendations of the 16th Report of the Standing Committee on Structural Safety (SCOSS) and to effect real changes in safety in construction
- Urban design - seek ways to influence a more integrated approach by built environment professionals, particularly between engineers and architects
- To ensure that civil engineers retain and enhance their professional authority in regard to changes to statutory control through the Building Regulations
- To engage structural engineering specialists in the principles of construction best practice through Constructing Excellence
