Mission statement
The advancement of public education in the subjects of soil mechanics, rock mechanics and engineering geology and in their application to engineering, through promotion of:
- the international status of geotechnical engineering
- geotechnical engineering through public meetings
- young geotechnical engineers
- geotechnical engineering through publications

- Cooling Prize, named after Dr L F Cooling, of the Building Research Station and the "Father of British Soil Mechanics"is awarded for short papers on any topic related to the field of geotechnics by persons under 30 years of age, who are members or student members of the BGA or are ICE members. In 2005 it will take place in Nottingham on 7 February.
- The Fleming Award, which is is sponsored by Cementation Foundations Skanska Ltd, and which is presented to the Project Team who have demonstrated a high level of excellence in Geotechnical design and construction. It takes place at the ICE in December, each year.
