Transport

Department for Transport (DfT) figures show that in 2006, the number of transport related jobs in the UK exceeded 1.3 million. Each year, approximately 17% of household income is spent on transport. Clearly transport infrastructure is a key part of the country's economic and social well-being, and for this reason achieving an efficient, sustainable, and integrated system is recognised to be a priority for the continued development and growth of the UK.

This section represents the work undertaken by ICE and its members on matters concerning transport. You can read about news and events relating to this specialist interest area, as well as finding books and journals on the subject.

You can also read about ICE's Engineering Board responsible for this area of civil engineering. ICE's Transport Board is committed to facilitating best practice in the delivery of transport infrastructure policy and solutions, worldwide. The remit of the Transport Board includes modes such as rail, road, local transport systems, maritime, and air. The Maritime Board and the Municipal Board also undertake work of relevance to transport professionals.

The UK’s road network covers 388,007 km, or just over 6m per person! About 1% of the network is motorway. The rail network covers 33,700 km, and includes 40,000 bridges and tunnels.

During 2006 and 2007 the Transport Board published papers on high speed rail and road pricing.  Representatives of the Board were invited to attend meetings with Shadow Ministers, Senior Civil Servants, and the Transport Select Committee. We also engaged with local politicians and gave numerous media interviews.

The UK's airports include Europe’s busiest, Heathrow, with a total of 63 million passengers per year. The UK's commercial seaports process 550 million tonnes of freight per year, with container traffic increasing at 4% per annum..

Civil engineers play a crucial role in providing, operating and maintaining these and other transport systems. ICE's Transport Board is committed to supporting members in the delivery of their individual and collective roles - by stimulating debate, disseminating best practice, and influencing and assisting Government, at all levels, to understand and address the areas of greatest need, as perceived by the civil engineer.
