ICE grade structure

The professional community that makes up ICE's membership is wide and varied and the grades of membership reflect this. There are more details about each grade in the suite of documents called Series 3000. You can find them on the website in the downloads library.

Resignation

If you are considering resigning because you are taking a sabbatical or maternity leave or have been made redundant, you may be eligible for a reduced rate. Read more.
 
If at any point you have difficulty paying your annual subscriptions, please contact us.
Reinstatement
ICE's reinstatement procedures differ depending on how long you have been off the membership roll, and can be time consuming. All members requesting reinstatement must submit CPD records for assessment and may be invited for a professional review interview.

ICE grade structure
Grade   More information
Student Studying civil engineering (or similar) courses that could lead to future membership. Student membership of ICE is free, and applications can be made online. ice.org.uk/students
Graduate Has completed a course of study and is working towards becoming professionally qualified. ice.org.uk/graduates
Technician Applies proven techniques to solve practical engineering problems. ICE 3002: Route to technician membership
Associate Works in a profession that is closely allied with the work of civil engineers in the built environment. Associates act as advocates of their respective disciplines and work in the broad field of civil engineering. ICE 3003: Route to associate membership
Member Qualifies at one of two levels:
  1. The first level is for those who have satisfied all the requirements of the member professional review (MPR).
  2. The second level is for those who have satisfied all the requirements of the chartered professional review (CPR).
ICE 3001: Route to membership
Fellow Attains the highest class of membership by making a significant contribution to the civil engineering profession or advancing the practice of engineering. ICE 3007: Fellowship of ICE

Companion Works at the same level as fellows, but in fields relating to civil engineering such as law and finance, rather than in civil engineering itself. ICE 3000: The value of professional qualification
Chartered environmentalist Some professionally qualified members can also apply for chartered environmentalist (CEnv) status with the Society for the Environment (SocEnv). Qualification involves satisfying an independent chartered environmentalist professional review. ICE 3008: Chartered environmentalist
Affiliate Not a civil engineer, technician or technical/scientific specialist but someone who works in related fields, such as law and finance. ICE 3000: The value of professional qualification
