E member support

ICE offers a range of services to assist and support our members. We have improved our online capabilities to make it easier for you to get in touch with us. Rooms and facilities in our London headquarters are open for the use of our members, and the Benevolent Fund offers help and advice to ICE members and their families.

Sustainable membership and paying online

We are working hard to become greener and more sustainable and reduce the amount of paper we use. To help us in these efforts, you can make your membership more sustainable and ultimately stop us sending you any paper at all. Did you know that you can opt to receive your annual subscription renewal via email, set up a direct debit mandate online or pay online – rather than getting everything in the post?

Last year 26,000 members chose to pay online. If you pay by direct debit you can set up an annual or eight monthly payment schedule and print out receipts. Paying online is quick, easy and secure and means your subscription renewal reminder arrives directly in your inbox. And better still, it’s good for the environment.

Using the website

The website is our main communication tool and is updated regularly. You can find current news stories and events, plus links to your regional team or country representative. The library is accessible via the site and the downloads library holds many reports and documents that can help you in your professional life.

We are currently working on a complete upgrade of the ICE site, which will improve the look and usability of our website across the board, making it even easier for you to work with the Institution online.

Using the MyICE section of the website

Use the members-only MyICE area to update your details, pay your subscriptions, stay informed, network with other civil engineers and share your professional interests.
To make it as easy and environmentally friendly as possible to get in touch with us, we are increasing the number of things you can do online:

  • amend contact details
  • inform us of your areas of professional/technical interest
  • pay ICE and associated society subscriptions
  • subscribe to and view journals
  • view/print receipts
  • join MyICE Network and find other members with similar interests
  • opt to renew your subscriptions electronically rather than through the post

Please take the time to manage your contact details regularly online so that we are able to get in touch with you and keep you up to date.

The salary survey

ICE's annual salary survey is available in the MyICE area of the website. ICE surveys working members in the UK and, in 2007, Hong Kong members too. The information is compiled to inform members of salary levels and other work-related benefits, such as holidays and bonuses. You can use it to see what engineers are paid and, if you are involved in recruitment, as a guide for setting realistic salary and benefits packages. The next survey will be published in 2009.

One Great George Street

ICE's headquarters are based in our distinguished listed building in Westminster in central London. The building creates healthy revenue; it is used for weddings, meetings and conferences and is a highly regarded and increasingly popular venue. After recent refurbishment, One Great George Street (OGGS) now has better disabled access.

OGGS contains a 60-seater restaurant called the Brasserie, which offers an à la carte and fast-track menu and has an excellent wine list. The Brasserie is open for lunch Mondays to Fridays from 12.00 to 14.30.

The One Great George Street Café Bar is open from 08.00 until 18.30 for breakfast, lunch and snacks, with the bar open from 11.00 until 18.30.

The Benevolent Fund

The Benevolent Fund of the Institution of Civil Engineers supports current and past members who need help for various reasons. The charity also helps the dependants of such members.

The Fund's objectives are:

  • to provide information and advice to civil engineers and their families
  • to help by providing one-off grants, loans and regular financial support
  • to operate and manage an estate of houses and flats built for engineers and their families
  • to develop awareness and understanding of our activities throughout the industry

The Benevolent Fund has a new scheme to help student members who are disabled or disadvantaged in some way. The scheme covers undergraduates who are studying on an ICE accredited course at a UK university.

The Benevolent Fund is supported by members financially and also by the time some of you are willing to give to be a 'visitor'. Visitors are a personal link between the Fund and its many beneficiaries around the UK. They advise the Benevolent Fund's Board of Trustees about the help that beneficiaries need and also visit newly bereaved partners to offer support from the Fund.
