The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) is a global membership organisation that promotes and advances civil engineering around the world for the public good.
Founded by a small group of civil engineers in a London coffee house in 1818, we now have over 80,000 members in 152 countries around the world.
We also have a commercial arm, Thomas Telford Ltd (TTL). TTL generates over £3m net funding a year, which is gifted to the Institution free of tax. TTL creates this income through its products, which include books, journals, training and recruitment, as well as the One Great George Street (OGGS) hospitality and catering service. TTL works hard to disseminate knowledge beyond the Institution as well as creating a reliable source of revenue.
The role of President is the highest honour that ICE members can bestow upon another member and from November 2008-09 Jean Venables OBE FREng FICE CEng CEnv MCIWEM FCGI Hon DSc is President of ICE.
The President is elected annually by Council and holds office for one year, performing functions that are somewhat similar to those of a Non Executive Chairman in a commercial organisation. Representing the public face of the profession, the President is responsible for championing the interests of civil engineers.
The Institution has been led by some of the world’s greatest civil engineers. Our past presidents include Thomas Telford, one of the UK’s foremost engineers and ICE’s first president, and Robert Stephenson who, with his father George, was a railway pioneer.
Our members continue to uphold these high standards today. Our members include some of the very best civil engineers, and their innovation, expertise and excellence give us our international reputation.
