Member (MICE)

Membership of the Institution of Civil Engineers (MICE) can be awarded to a wide range of engineers practising in the broad area of civil engineering. Professionally qualified members of ICE are internationally recognised for their level of competence.

Membership (MICE) can be awarded at two levels and these can be obtained by the standard or non-standard route:

1. Member Professional Review (MPR)

Applicants must satisfy all the requirements of the Member Professional Review (MPR). Their educational base and subsequent development enables them to act as exponents of today's technology, and apply and manage its application within the broad field of civil engineering. As a member, they are entitled to use the post-nominal letters MICE to their name.

2. Chartered Professional Review (CPR)
Applicants must satisfy the requirements of the Chartered Professional Review (CPR). Their educational base and subsequent development have provided them with the ability to lead teams in developing holistic solutions to engineering problems. As a member, they are entitled to add the letters MICE to their name and use the ICE’s protected title of Chartered Civil Engineer.

Benefits of becoming a member of the ICE

There are a host of benefits to support qualified Members in their civil engineering career. These include the use of the Benevolent Fund assistance and support, Access to the ICE library and the NCE as well as designatory letters MICE and the opportunity to register with the Engineering Council as either an Incorporated Engineer (IEng) or Chartered Engineer (CEng).

Standard route to MICE  

There are three stages in qualifying as a Member (MICE) via the standard route:

 

1. Educational Base

The starting point for any aspiring member is their educational achievement. This can be satisfied by one, or a combination of the following ways:

If your academic qualifications do not meet the ICE requirements for Membership (MICE) or the Engineering Council's educational base for registration to become IEng or CEng, they may still be able to demonstrate that they have acquired this in a number of other ways.

2. Initial Professional Development

Initial Professional Development (IPD) is where you develop the special skills and competence as a practising civil engineer. IPD can be satisfied by completion of one of the following:

ICE approved training schemes
Self managed training & experience (career appraisal)

3. Professional Review options

The third and final stage in becoming a professionally qualified Member of ICE is the Professional Review.

You must have completed stages 1 and 2 before making an application for Professional Review (stage 3).

*Available to candidates who are Members (MICE or MICE IEng), and who hold the appropriate educational base.

**Registration with the Engineering Council is subject to candidates holding the appropriate educational base and the Professional Review interview being conducted in English subject only to the provisions of the Welsh Language Act 1993

Non-standard routes to MICE

If your academic qualifications do not meet the ICE requirements for Membership (MICE) or the Engineering Council's educational base for registration to become IEng or CEng, they may still be able to demonstrate that they have acquired this in a number of other ways.
