- How to support QUEST
QUEST is striving to increase the level of support it can offer to undergraduates to encourage more to enter the profession as well as providing support for those members looking to develop further.
Professor Adrian Long, ICE President 2002 – 2003 and Chair of the QUEST committee, made the following statement as part of his ongoing support of QUEST:
'The Institution and other engineering bodies are particularly keen to enthuse young people back into construction and further develop programmes to target schools. The discussion that has taken place between the Institution and our leading companies about high calibre engineers not necessarily being professionally qualified, or indeed members of ICE, has given us much food for thought.
The crisis facing the engineering profession is becoming acute and must be addressed as a matter of urgency. The number of young people choosing engineering as a career is declining at an alarming rate and we must work together both to boost the attractiveness of the profession and stem the tide of good graduates moving into other industries. We are delighted that these prominent engineering organisations currently working in partnership with the ICE have demonstrated commitment to working with us to address the problem.
One of the priorities of the Institution is to increase the number of scholarships available to prospective students by increasing the financial support available to the QUEST Scholarship Scheme. It is essential that QUEST develops in partnership with engineering companies in order to add value to the scholarship programme.
We have a target of awarding at least 100 scholarships a year to young people who demonstrate leadership potential and the plan is to expand and develop the number of scholarships available in the years ahead. We would be delighted if other engineering and construction based organisations could support the programme with a contribution to future scholarships so that the ICE can reach its target of awarding 100 scholarships each year.'
Benefits
The benefits to students are clear; students who have been identified as outstanding students with the potential to become successful leaders in civil engineering are awarded money to support their studies and are offered work placements with prominent companies. Many of the students are eventually offered employment with their partner company after graduation. The benefits to the industry are also wide reaching.
