Queensland

Welcome to the ICE Queensland Page

Queenslanders, welcome to the Queensland ICE webpage.  We hope that you find the information on this page useful and if not, then please contact us.  If you wish to help or think that you can do better then we are always looking for members to challenge us and the Institution to further the ICE.

We have a challenging 12 months ahead to build on what the ICE has been doing in Queensland in the last 12 months.  This is in addition to the current environment being a challenge with a new Queensland government and the projects that they may bring, and of course the need to enjoy Queensland and all it has to offer when not at work.

Following a number of successful events in 2011 and the AGM held on the 16 May 2012, one of the first actions was to update the Queensland webpage. Well we can tick that off the list, and the committee hopes it’s been worth the wait! Speaking of the committee, here they are complete with links to their pen portraits.

Queensland Committee 2012 - 2013

The committee was formed unofficially in late 2010 and was formally voted in at the May 2012 AGM.

After being quiet for a few years, ICE Queensland branch has gained momentum in the last 12 months, following the establishment of a Brisbane based committee made up of 7 local members.  The committee under the stewardship of ICE Representative for Queensland, Mike Straughton, have organised a number of evening presentations on topics from Aluminium Smelting Plant construction in the Middle East, through to Brisbane’s second runway project.  The branch also saw the visit of the then ICE President Peter Hansford to Brisbane in 2011, where he was welcomed by a large number of local members who gave clear feedback on local issues and the role the ICE needs to take to further its representation in Queensland and Australia.

At the evening presentation on the 19 February, Mike announced that he was relocating to Perth and Glen Miney agreed to step up into the role of ICE representative for Queensland and chair for the group as well as keeping the secretary role up to the AGM.  Former Treasurer Stephen Troughton has also moved to Perth and Gavin Chadbourn has agreed to step into this role.

The committee now consists of 5 members, but we are always looking for additional members to assist and we received a number of responses at the meeting on the 19 February.  The positions are for a year, with new candidates able to be put forward at the next AGM in 2013.  The only role that is not available is the ICE Representative for Queensland as this is approved by the ICE itself.  (See links for AGM voting rules and nomination forms).

Graduate Essay Meetings

ICE Queensland has previously held a number of evening meetings to discuss essay writing and to provide workshops to help graduates to become chartered.  It is looking to run these workshops again.

The group discusses an essay topic at each meeting. We also cover general chartership queries from questions about reports and reviews to support in signing off objectives.

Professional reviews are held annually in Sydney with several group members looking to sit their review in March 2013.

Details of future graduate meetings will be sent out via the Transtasman email list so please make sure your details are up to date in the MyICE section of the website, most importantly your email address and specify your branch as Australia - Queensland.

If you are a Chartered Engineer and you’re interested in supporting graduates in the region, please also get in touch as we would love to have your help, be that mock reviews or experienced guidance in essay topic discussions.

Engineers Australia

ICE has a close association with Engineers Australia and members of each body are generally welcome to attend the technical meetings of both organisations. Click here for information on Engineers Australia.
