The Membership group is one of the three strands of the ICE London Graduates & Students Committee.
The Membership Group works to raise awareness of the ICE and to help student and graduate members in the following ways:
Encouraging under 19s to take civil engineering courses by:
- providing training to become STEMNET Ambassadors and by hosting an annual event to thank ICE members who are ambassadors
- investigating other opportunities for engineers to take part in mentoring schemes, for example via CREST mentors
Encouraging college students to become student members by:
- running a mentoring scheme whereby graduate engineers are paired with college students
- attending college visits with Membership Development Officers
- taking college students on site visits (last year the students went to the Olympic Park site)
- running workshops at the college
Encouraging university students to become student members by:
- attending university visits with the Membership Development Officers
- running a perennial bridge building competition where students from different universities in London compete in mixed teams with graduate engineers to design and build a paper bridge
- the use of graduate mentors for university students
Improving links with other institutions by:
- holding the Young’s Trophy – a sports competition held every year
- holding The Great Engineering Balloon Debate – various engineering institutions give a presentation to a roomful of sixth formers about why their engineering was the best
Organising social events:
- Christmas Social
- Summer Social
