ICE London is involved in a number of educational projects with schools in the region:
This free, national competition allows 12 and 13 year old students to work in teams with a construction industry professional (ICE ambassador) to complete a challenging project which introduces real-world problems to the classroom -designing and building a model of a community sports venue. This project was initiated in partnership with BBC 21 CC (21st Century Classroom) and the London Transport Museum in January 2010, supported by Crossrail. The project involves more than sixty Year 10 students studying diplomas in engineering or construction and the built environment working with a number of professional engineers to find the solutions to real engineering challenges as faced by Crossrail. Students then utilise the BBC 21 CC's state-of-the-art media facilities to record and edit a short film documenting the project and including vox pops. Read more and watch the short films
In 2010 we collaborated with five London schools to take part in the Lord Mayor's show. Working with a number of ICE volunteer engineering ambassadors and creative arts organisation Kinetika, we ran a number of school workshops. The schools were then able to construct models of iconic London infrastructure, which were carried in procession by students, teachers, ICE members and staff as part of our ICE human float. Engineering Your Future - Careers Awareness Days
Engineering Your Future (EYF) is a key date in the diary of secondary schools and sixth form colleges across the UK. These one day career events have been established to provide students and teachers with a better understanding of the opportunities a career in engineering can offer.
The day is delivered in partnership with engineering companies who present a series of interactive workshops for the students. Young professional engineers volunteer to lead student groups, and a number of ICE London’s members are actively involved.
EYF is the only careers event of its kind to have the backing of the UK’s leading engineering groups and institutions. It is jointly coordinated and sponsored by the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, the Institution of Engineering and Technology and SETPOINT London East.
SET for Sport
In September 2009 the Science Engineering and Technology (SET) for Sport one day event was organised jointly by ICE London, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and Portia for secondary students in the London Borough of Hackney.
The day brought together engineering Ambassadors from ICE and IMechE with groups of year 8 students. These groups were tasked to design sports equipment and infrastructure for the competitive sporting world in 2050. Working with their Ambassadors, the students brainstormed ideas. The student groups then presented their ideas and engineering solutions to each other and debated the issues around design and ethics.
The event enabled young people to develop innovative engineering ideas related to sport by exploring how sport has changed. The students compared past and present games to understand how improved performance has been achieved.
This event succeeded in its aim to inspire young people through engineering challenges, and at the same time it showcased the contribution that engineering makes to sporting achievement.
