This project, initiated by ICE London, BBC 21 CC (BBC 21st Century Classroom), London Transport Museum and supported by Crossrail was first launched in 2010.
Year 10 diploma and GCSE students of Engineering and Construction & the Built Environment take part in Crossrail site visits and then work with volunteer ambassadors in a series of workshops to explore some of the engineering challenges of the Crossrail scheme. The students work in groups and gain experience of solving technical problems while developing skills in team-working, project management and communication.
Following the workshops, the students utilise the BBC’s state-of-the-art media facilities to produce short films made up of animations and interviews about their group work and the challenges of their particular Crossrail site. The project finale is a showcase event at the London Transport Museum for all the schools, ambassadors and project partners, where each group of students screens their film and has the opportunity to take part in Q&A.
The project aims to inspire the next generation of civil engineers and highlights the contribution that engineering makes to society - and the importance of effectively communicating ideas.
