Alasdair Young MEng MSt CEng MIMechE
Associate Director, Buro Happold Limited

Alasdair leads Buro Happold’s sustainability team in London and is responsible for the Energy Sector within the Practice. He holds a mechanical engineering degree from Cambridge University and joined Buro Happold after working in the UK’s largest newspaper production plant.

Alasdair’s main interest is in designing infrastructure systems which can enable sustainable and low carbon development, particularly when utility systems for energy and water can be designed to ‘close the loop’ with materials, waste, and wastewater cycles. He is the Practice ‘champion’ for community heating and has worked on projects through, feasibility, design and procurement.

As well as technical expertise Alasdair has experience of developing techno-economic models of low carbon energy and infrastructure systems to develop business cases for funding and procurement. Recent work has focused on delivery of new sustainable utility systems on large redevelopment schemes. Key projects include the Olympic Park, Kuala Lumpur International Finance District and Titanic Quarter.

Alasdair has led a number of policy projects, including work for London First and the Greater London Authority on developing low carbon heat networks throughout London.
Alasdair has also given evidence to the London Plan Examination in Public on decentralised energy. He was a member of the UK Green Building Council Taskforce on Sustainable Infrastructure.
