ICE London Water Panel

The Water Panel is chaired by Ian Kirkaldy, and includes experts in the management of water, wastewater and flood risk in London.

The purpose of the panel is to promote the value of water in London and the River Thames as among the city’s key assets and to use the professional expertise and experience of the ICE and its members to inform decisions that affect London’s water environment.
 

Chair:
Ian Kirkaldy, Vice President, Black & Veatch
Ian Kirkaldy has more than 30 years experience in the delivery and management of multidisciplinary water and wastewater projects throughout the world. Ian is part of the Black & Veatch, Water Europe leadership team working as both a consultant and a contractor across the UK water Industry. His career highlights include leading the water engineering for Heathrow Terminal 5, the delivery of Mogden and Reading sewage treatment works and the design of the Perry Oaks replacement sludge treatment facility.
 

Secretary:
Ian Hamilton, Graduate civil and structural engineer, Mott MacDonald
With a background in water and wastewater infrastructure design and construction, Ian has worked on projects across sectors, both in the UK and abroad. His key interest is in the development of sustainable infrastructure, identifying areas in which the UK can develop engineering capabilities for the delivery of such infrastructure both in home markets and further a-field.
 

Roland Grzybek, Regional director (Water) Europe, Halcrow
Roland has worked for 37 years in the water sector of the civil engineering industry specialising in flood and coastal risk management and water utilities work. He works as a consultant for Halcrow Group Ltd is an ICE Reviewer, supervising civil engineer and a Fellow of the Institution since 2000.
 

Ed McCann, Director, Expedition Engineering
Ed McCann has over 20 years working on major projects in the UK and around the world. With a Masters Degree in hydraulic engineering and several years working as a river engineer he has particular expertise in the strategic design of sustainable urban water systems. He played a key role in design of the water engineering systems on both the Heathrow T5 Water project and the London 2012 Olympics, where he advised the ODA’s sustainability team. Ed is a Fellow and Trustee of the ICE and a Royal Academy of Engineering Visiting Professor of Innovation.
 

John Sweetnam, Regional Director (Water), AECOM
John has over 20 years experience of civil engineering design specialising in the water and tunnelling sectors.  He was task team leader for Water Engineering on the Terminal 5 project at Heathrow Airport with Black & Veatch before joining Aecom to lead their water and infrastructure design team in St Albans undertaking a wide variety of projects for water company and private sector development clients. He is currently seconded to Thames Water and looks after engineering for the western section of the £3.6b Thames Tunnel.
 

Judith Sykes, Associate, Expedition
Judith’s background is in the design of large water infrastructure projects including water supply projects in the Middle East, Water Engineering systems for Terminal 5 and several sustainable water masterplanning projects. As the Water Manager on the Olympic Sustainability Team, she was responsible for delivering a 40% reduction in mains supplied water through water efficiency measures and the implementation of a site wide non potable water system. She was also developed strategies to ensuring the project met its aims in relation to Sustainable Drainage Systems and flood risk. Judith is a STEM ambassador and is working with schools on the Design Council’s Water Challenge.
