Committees & branches

ICE North East operates through its Regional Committee made up of members of the branches, interest groups and sections and assisted by the Regional Support Team (RST).

The region is composed of Northumbria and Teesside Branches, Graduates & Students Section, Special Interest Panels, Seniors Group and the Northern Geotechnical Group.

Committee members are volunteers and come from a range of backgrounds within the civil engineering profession. If you would like to volunteer on a committee please contact the chair person of that committee, branch or special interest group.

ICE NE Chair, David Toll
Eur Ing CEng FICE

David Toll is Professor of Engineering at Durham University. He is a geotechnical engineer, specialising in the engineering behaviour of unsaturated soils. His research focusses on resilience of transportation infrastructure and rainfall-induced landslides, investigating the impacts of climate change on earthworks slopes.

David has a longstanding commitment to ICE, having worked in industry before becoming an academic. He has been an ICE member since 1989 and became a Fellow in 2013. He has served as Chair of Northern Geotechnical Group and as a member of the ICE NE Regional Committee since 2009, becoming Vice-Chair in 2011. He is a member of ICE NE Sustainability Panel (since 2010) and was an invited contributor to the Institution of Civil Engineers Manual of Geotechnical Engineering (2011).
