Graduate and student competitions

ICE runs a number of competitions for graduates and students.

Papers competition presentation with Jean VenablesThe Papers competition is an opportunity to develop your writing, presentation and debating skills and a great way to boost your CPD. Entries  can be based on university projects, quarterly employment reports, or professional review reports. Katie Goode won the 2011 NW competition. Katie said, "It’s a great opportunity to improve written and verbal communication skills whilst sharing a topic you are interested in with other interested people." How to enter the 2012 papers competition
Share your ideas: write, present, debate! This is an opportunity to compete against your peers and work towards your development objectives. Entries should be based on your own work and can be adapted from university projects, quarterly reports or professional review reports.

Submit a 400 word synopsis of your paper, together with application form ICE3159 (attached), to ChrisHudson@murphygroup.co.uk by 12:00 noon on Wednesday 2nd March 2012.

You will be advised by Friday 9th March whether your synopsis has been accepted. Thereafter, a full paper (maximum 4000 words) must be submitted by 12:00 noon on 23rd March. Should you be successfully shortlisted you will be requested to prepare a 15 minute presentation for the final of the regional competition which is likely to be held at the CUBE, Manchester on 19th April 2012. The winner will receive £100 in Amazon Vouchers and will be entered to compete in the national competition.

Communications competition 2010The Communications competition is held each Spring. Mastering the skills of communication and public involvement makes the difference between a successful project and one that doesn’t start at all! Competitors produce consultation strategies, leaflets and public consultation presentations for the engineering scenarios. The winning team goes on to compete in the semi-final and potentially the national final.

How to enter the 2012 competition
The competition is an opportunity for engineers to practise, demonstrate and enhance their skills in a realistic environment. Teams will be required to produce consultation strategies, leaflets and public consultation presentations for an engineering scenario of their choice.

  • Open to all graduate and student members with no more than 7 years industry experience.
  • Teams of four (or five with an individual student member) may enter 
  • Entry will be open until the 9th March, with Regional Rounds held in late March, Semi-Finals in April and the Final in May 2012. Presentation Venue TBC.

Prize: Up to five seats at the 2012 ICE North West Annual Awards Dinner

Construction Challenge 2010Construction Challenge
The North West Graduates & Students committee runs the Construction Challenge. A highlight of the calendar, this is an evening of challenges, surprises and fun. It takes place simultaneously in Manchester and Liverpool. Read about the 2011 Construction Challenge.
