2012 - 2013

Tom Coon
Hello! Welcome to the ICE Cheshire Branch and thanks for taking the time to visit us.

My name is Tom Coon, I work for the Environment Agency as a Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management Engineer and I am the Cheshire Branch Chairman.

I am very lucky to be taking over the reins during a period of great success for the branch and would like to offer my thanks to Mark Rees who has done a fantastic job during his year as Chair. I hope to continue this success and growth over the next 12 months.

I am excited about what the year ahead holds in store. We have worked hard to put together what I hope will be an interesting and diverse programme of events covering a broad spectrum of topics and issues, including: Site Visits to the Metrolink project, the Sandon Dock WWTW Upgrades, the Impact of Fukushima on the UK Nuclear New Build Programme, the Knutsford to Bowdon Environmental Improvement Scheme and a look at Public vs. Private Mega Projects - London Bridge & The Shard. Our flagship event is a Question Time Style event with local MPs invited to discuss engineering issues of local and national importance. Due to be chaired by current ICE President, Richard Coackley this event promises to be a highlight in our calendar.

I am exceptionally proud of our branch’s commitment to education and the promotion of Civil Engineering and the ICE. Once again we will be organising a schools event in partnership with the IMechE, IStructE and IChemE promoting careers in engineering aimed at 13-17 year olds. If you or a member of your family would be interested in attending this event please contact us for further details.

As Engineers I strongly believe that we have to get better at promoting the good work that we do. As the world’s attention is focused on our great country in this Olympic year, Civil Engineers have a real reason to be truly proud of what we can achieve. We should look to embrace the opportunity that this gives us to highlight the important role we play in society and to encourage the best and the brightest of the next generation to consider Civil Engineering as a career. With this in mind I would encourage all our members to consider becoming an ICE or STEM Ambassador. It is a fantastic and rewarding experience which provides a platform to promote and showcase Engineering at its best. For further details please see the Education Volunteer section of this website.

We are always looking for new ways to communicate with our members and partners to keep you informed and up to date of our forthcoming events and matters of engineering interest. Our website is updated regularly and I would encourage everyone to embrace the technologies available to us and sign up to our Twitter Feed and Facebook and Linked In groups.

We are on the lookout for committed people at any level or grade of membership to join our committee to help us deliver our ambitious programme and to develop new ideas. If you are interested in becoming involved with the Cheshire Branch or have any ideas for meetings or topics you would be interested in, please don’t hesitate to contact any member of the committee.
