One in a series of frequently asked questions from North West ICE members - on how to progress from IEng to CEng.
I am a professionally qualified member and achieved IEng MICE a few years ago. I would like to progress to CEng status, but I know my qualifications are not acceptable. What should I do?
You have two options:
1. Top up your existing educational base with further study, either:
- an approved MSc, or
- appropriate final year subjects from an accredited MEng degree course.
Before you start seek advice from the Regional Support Team as to their eligibility for top up to CEng level. You may need to submit for an academic assessment with the ICE in London, to confirm that the study you propose meets the requirements for CEng. Read more at www.ice.org.uk/academicassessmentnew
2. Another option is to progress to CEng via the Technical Report Route (TRR). This route is purely for those without the recognised academic base. You will need to demonstrate your academic equivalence through a technical report and review process. (TRR (at a different level) also applies for those without the necessary academic base for MPR IEng, for example those who have HNC/HND).
There are three stages:
a) Initial Assessment to the Institution including:
- Synopsis of Technical Report
- CV
- Confirmation of Mentor support
- Application form (no fee at this point)
A panel will consider your applications and give advice. You may be askedto provide more information and to resubmit an initial assessment. If the panel accepts your initial submission you can progress to the written submission stage.
b) Written submission (this must follow within 12 months of acceptance of your initial submission)
- Application form
- Sponsors’ Questionnaires
- Fee
When your reviewers are made known to you, you will send the following documents to them:
- Technical Report (3000-10000 words) – focusing on technical aspects of your work
- Experience Report – covering the breadth of your experience
- Record of CPD
c) Interview Stage
- Part 1 - Academic Review based solely on your submitted Technical Report
- Part 2 – Professional Review based on the attributes for membership as set out in Appendix A of ICE3001A - Routes to Membership (MICE).
The important things to realise about this route are that the Technical Report you produce MUST demonstrate your technical competence and you must identify the engineering principles involved rather than just describing the project(s) on which you have been working.
You must also have compensatory experience, depending on your existing qualification, and you must be operating at a level of responsibility appropriate for proposed grade of membership. (See ICE3004A - Non Standard Routes to Membership and MGN 35 - Technical Report Route (TRR)
IEng MICE/CEng MICE).
