Educational Base and Initial Professional Development

One in a series of frequently asked questions from North West ICE members - on completing Educational Base and Initial Professional Development at the same time.

ICE 3001 states that ‘under certain circumstances the completion of Educational Base and Initial Professional Development can take place at the same time’. How do I achieve this?

This possibility is only open to trainees who are undertaking part-time study (or on a sandwich course) to obtain the Educational Base for a particular grade of membership, while at the same time undertaking Initial Professional Development.* By very carefully planning to achieve the required range and depth of experience, you can complete all of the 15 Development Objectives and develop the attributes of a particular grade of membership by the time you complete your academic qualification by part-time study.

However, you must also concurrently have satisfied CPD requirements and will need a further period of consolidation and preparation, usually around 12 months, before taking your Professional Review.

Of paramount importance is the need for you to systematically and comprehensively undertake your IPD to thoroughly develop the attributes of a professional civil engineer. Failure to do so will inevitably be revealed during your Professional Review.

Don’t be tempted to rush it! A few extra months' IPD, focused on polishing up your professional attributes, will be an excellent investment both at Professional Review and during the many years that you practise as a professional civil engineer.

*QUEST scholars also can record Initial Professional Development during their studies.
