Sponsors for Professional Review

One of a series of frequently asked questions from North West ICE members on Professional Review.

Why do I need sponsors for my Professional Review application?

Sponsor questionnaires help assess a candidate’s potential to be a professionally qualified civil engineer. Sponsor comments are confidential, so they can comment frankly and impartially on your abilities, experience and potential.

You are required to have three sponsors. Sponsors must know you and believe you are fit for election to membership.

Your lead sponsor is your designated mentor during the review submission process and co-ordinates the other sponsors’ reports. The lead sponsor:

  • signs the report prĂ©cis,
  • offers advice on reports and presentations,
  • and may arrange mock reviews.
The lead sponsor should understand the current review process and standards.
.
The lead sponsor must:

  • be a member of the Institution, at least to the grade for which you are applying,
  • and should preferably have been involved in your training.

Your SCE or mentor may be the most appropriate person.

The other sponsors must be members of any Engineering Council (EC) licensed professional institution or an organization with a Mutual Exemption Agreement.

Your sponsors may be co-workers or outside colleagues with whom you work closely. They may understand different aspects of your experience, helping reviewers better assess your capabilities.

Choose your sponsors carefully
. Their duty is to declare you a “a fit and proper person for admission to membership”. This is an informed statement measured against competencies set out by the Institution, by-laws and Rules of Professional Conduct. Guidance on sponsor roles is in ICE 3123 – Sponsor Questionnaire.
