Whate are the benefits of ICE Membership and how to become involved?
By joining ICE and becoming a member, you become part of a highly respected organisation with over 80,000 members, 2,000 in Northern Ireland, representing the civil engineering profession around the world.
There are different grades for different career stages and different career paths. If having read the information below, you are still unsure of your grade or career path; please contact Richard Kirk, Membership Development Officer (MDO) on: richard.kirk@ice.org.uk
ICE membership comprises eight different grades of membership:
Student
If you are currently studying a civil engineering or associated (accredited) course which could lead to professional membership you can ICE as a student member. Student membership is free and applications can be made online.
Graduate
If you have completed an accredited course and would like to become professionally qualified, you can join ICE as a graduate member. Graduate membership will provide you with many benefits not least as an ideal stepping stone to progressing your career to professional qualification.
Technician
Whilst civil engineering technicians are the backbone of our industry, they are currently under represented as a professional grade of membership, something particularly pronounced within Northern Ireland. If you would like to help us change this situation by achieving a professional qualification for the work you do, please join us.
Member
Membership of the Institution of Civil Engineers (MICE) can be awarded to a wide range of engineers practising within the industry. You can become either an incorporated or a chartered engineer depending on your qualifications and your experience to date.
In order to become a Member you will have to undertake a professional review but your reward will come in the shape of a sense of personal achievement as well as peer approval and professional recognition.
Associate Member
If you are working in a profession that is closely allied to the civil engineering profession, yet do not have an academic qualification in civil engineering but would like to become professionally qualified with the ICE, you can join ICE as an associate member.
Fellow
If you are in a position of responsibility and would like to promote the role of the professionally qualified civil engineer at the highest grade of membership, you should consider becoming a Fellow. Currently this grade is also under represented within Northern Ireland. We would encourage you to help us overturn this statistic.
Affiliate
If you work in a field associated to civil engineering, such as law or geology, or you are a civil engineer who is not pursuing professional qualification with ICE you may be eligible to become an Affiliate Member of the ICE.
Companion
If you work at the same level as a Fellow of the ICE, but in a field relating to civil engineering, rather than in civil engineering itself, you may be eligible to become a Companion of the ICE.
Members can also become involved with schools projects as a volunteer ambassador.
