Reservoir safety group

The ICE NI Reservoirs Safety Group was established to assist Rivers Agency in shaping the policy which will underpin the Reservoirs Bill.

The Group has been able to draw on the expertise available throughout ICE NI to ensure that this piece of legislation is rooted in appropriate engineering policy.

The group achieves this by applying expert knowledge and guidance in supporting the management of flood risk and its aim is to reduce and manage risks that floods pose to human health, the environment, culture heritage and built up settlements.

ICE supports the Governments proposal of the Reservoir Safety policy which shall create a legal and administrative framework for regulating reservoir safety in Northern Ireland. It is proposed that reservoirs would be managed and operated to minimise the risk of flooding due to the uncontrolled release of water resulting from a dam or structural failure and thereby safeguarding human life, the environment, cultural heritage and economic activity.
