Sustainability group

ICE Northern Ireland recognises that engineers must apply sustainable methods so that the environment can be protected and preserved now and in the future.

The ICE NI Sustainability Group seeks to encourage members of the profession to adopt and implement sustainable approaches to civil engineering.

ICE NI Sustainability Group demonstrates the region’s commitment to the promotion of the ICE charter for sustainable development.

At a regional level, the Group aims to:

  • provide an informed voice for the membership on sustainability matters (briefing sheets, media opportunities);
  • provide information and education to members and non-members across the diverse range of understanding and engagement
  • showcase the success stories of civil engineers contributing towards sustainable development in order to encourage the spread of best practice
  • implement policy generated by ICE Environment and Sustainability Panel.

In 2012 the Sustainability Group initiated a Sustainability Award for the region which was awarded to Graham and Ilex Regneration for their delivery of the Peace Bridge. Other entrants and more information is available here.

ICE NI is a partner of Climate NI.

Case Study

Ballymully River Flood Protection Scheme, Moneymore

Through recent years the Ballymully River has over-topped its banks on several occasions during periods of prolonged and heavy rainfall. This combined with upstream run-off from Slieve Gallion provides the potential risk of serious flooding to some 100 dwellings.

In February of 2008, DAWSON WAM Ltd were appointed as the main contractor by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Rivers Agency (DARDNI) to construct new flood defences and reduce the risk of flooding to a 1 in 100 year event.
