Bridges to Schools

Bridges to Schools is an intitiative which takes a 12m long model of a cable-stayed bridge into Primary Schools.

Pupils are able to build, walk across and deconstruct the bridge, learning about bridges, teamwork and civil engineering.

The Bridge model is available for visits of 2-4 days. It is aimed at children in P5, P6 and P7. Schools often group together and arrange for one school to host the Bridge while pupils from other local schools come to the host school for the experience.

Bridges to schools

To host the Bridge you need to have a gym or hall with a clear length of 15m. It is very important that this space is available, otherwise the bridge will not fit.

Usually four one-hour sessions fit into the school day.

Get involved

If you would like to get involved with Bridges to Schools please contact the ICE Scotland office to be put in touch with your local volunteer coordinator. Each session requires 1 Lead Engineer and 2-4 Assistant Engineers.

Lead Engineers usually have a few years' experience, and are required to attend a training day before any school event they wish to lead.

Assistant Engineers can be students, graduates or experienced engineers and do not need to do any advance training or preparation, receiving a briefing prior to the start of the school day.

Please ensure you are registered as a STEM Ambassador. Details of how to register can be found at www.stemscotland.com
