Technicians in Scotland
Civil Engineering Technicians are essential members of the team on every Civil Engineering project and their knowledge and experience is vital to project delivery. Membership of the Institution brings a host of benefits not least keeping your professional knowledge up-to-date.
Professional Qualification - what’s in it for me?
Whether you’re a new or experienced technician, professional qualification gives you greater recognition for your role in the civil engineering team and elevates your professional status. At a time of tough competition in the industry, this gives a boost to your CV and job prospects.
Being a Technician Member demonstrates your commitment to the profession and industry, and shows that you are keen to progress and develop your skills. Civil engineering is a global business and an internationally recognised professional qualification can be your passport to moving company or country.
As well as being a goal in its own right Technician Membership can also be the first step in progressing your career to eventual Incorporated, Chartered and Fellow status.
How do I become a Technician Member?
There is a route to suit everyone, no matter what your academic background.
If you are working and have a BTEC National Certificate or Diploma in one of the Construction Pathways, or a relevant NVQ/SVQ Level 3, you should be eligible for the standard route. You’ll need to join online as a Technician Graduate which is available at a special concessionary rate, but some companies pay for this. If your company has an ICE Approved Company Training Scheme you should try to join it, but this is not compulsory. You can apply for Technician Membership even if you have not been on a Training Scheme.
If you do not have formal qualifications but have sufficient experience, within the broad area of civil engineering, you could be eligible for the Technical Report Route, which requires you to submit a report detailing your experience with supporting documents from your Sponsors.
How do I apply?
Everyone applying to become a professionally qualified engineering Technician needs to pass a Professional Review. Standard route professional review interviews last no longer than 45 minutes, during which time two Reviewers will engage you in discussion on issues highlighted in your CV, CPD records and your Project and Experience Reports. Your aim is to demonstrate that you have the 9 attributes required to achieve EngTech TMICE.
Standard Professional Review Route
You will need to gather and submit various documents by the deadline which is normally 2-3 months ahead of the review interview sessions held in the Spring and Autumn. The application process and the documents you need to submit are described in Appendix B of the Routes To Technician Membership Document.
Non- standard Technical Report Route (TRR)
The Eng Tech TRR is only open to candidates who do not have an approved academic base for this membership grade. It is a two staged process with an initial assessment followed by a professional review interview which lasts about 1 hour. The required documents can be submitted at any time for initial assessment. The Professional Interview is held after the initial assessment is complete, at a mutually convenient time and place for candidate and Reviewers. Detailed information on the application and submission requirements can be found here.
