Panel for Historical Engineering Works

The purpose of the panel is to identify, record and promote knowledge of works illustrative of the history and development of civil engineering and to encourage excellence in the conservation of significant examples.

A database of all such structures, covering the British Isles, is held at One Great George Street London.

The British Isles is split into regions each of which has a Panel Member responsible for their region. The primary task of the members is the preparation and periodic updating of record forms for historic engineering structures in their region. Scotland has two members covering the West of Scotland and the East of Scotland respectively.

Scottish Group

The Scottish group of PHEW, managed by Panel members Roland Paxton and Sandra Purves, organises an annual visit to engineering structures in a particular area. It also organises one or two lectures a year. The Scottish group is always interested in hearing from members who would like to help with preparing and updating records. The group’s annual business meeting is held each year near the end of November.
