About ICE South East England

South East England is the largest of ICE's 12 UK regions, with around 11,000 members and covers a wide geographic area ranging from Kent across to Hampshire and the Isle of Wight up to Milton Keynes.

What we do
The plans for regional activities are laid out in a regional business plan, supported by a regional budget, which runs to the calendar year. The regional business plan is built around the following four themes.

Public voice
A key objective for the region is to raise the profile of civil engineering, to achieve better recognition for the profession and to inform those making decisions about investment in the region’s infrastructure. To this end, we adapt ICE policy initiatives such as State of the Nation to regional priorities and use local good news stories to profile ICE in regional media.

Member communications
Our aim here is to share and exchange information with members to keep them engaged with the Institution and to support capacity building, knowledge exchange and influencing the public debate about the future development of the region. To this end, we keep our members informed of the activities and news in their area through regional newsletters, website and e-newsletters.

Membership
The demand for skilled and experienced civil engineers reinforces the need for us to deliver on our core purpose ‘to develop and qualify professionals engaged in civil engineering’. Our focus is on increasing the numbers sitting and passing their professional review at all grades of membership. In addition, we promote ICE and civil engineering in schools and to students at university, and support ICE national capacity building initiatives.

Networks and events
In a time of change, it is vital that opportunities be provided for members to share their knowledge and keep pace with the latest developments. We normally run 80 plus learned society events each year and in addition to learned society events, we promote good practice and innovation by holding competitions to showcase engineering excellence in the region.

How we are organised

Regional Committee
A regional committee governs the region and meets four times a year. It consists of a Regional Chair (selected from the previous session’s branch chairs), the Chairs & Senior Vice-Chairs from each Branch, the Regional Member of Council, Hon. Treasurer, Hon. Secretary and the region’s GSNet Representative. A Regional Executive Board consisting of the Regional Chair, Branch Chairs and Treasurer is empowered to act for the committee between meetings.

Regional Support Team
A Regional Support Team provides administrative, communications and membership support. The team consists of Regional Director, Assistant Regional Director, Membership Development Officers, Internal and External Communications Executives and two Administrators.
