G&S Competitions

ICE South East England runs two competitions for our graduate and student members.

Communications Competition

The ICE Communications Competition is a great opportunity to gain experience in this area, or to showcase existing skills. Teams are provided with fictional scenarios and then asked to produce an information leaflet and consultation strategy, and to present their solutions at a 'public meeting'. ICE members and other engineering professionals play the part of local residents and members of the public, trying to give the presenting teams a taste of what a real meeting can feel like (and having a fair amount of fun while they are at it!).

We are now accepting entries for the 2013 competition.

Closing date for entries: Friday 15th February 2013 (5pm)
Presentation Evening: Tuesday 19th March 2013 (6.30pm - East Grinstead)
Prize for winning team: £100
Cost of entry: £50 per team

Papers Competition

The Graduate and Student Papers Competition (GSPC) promotes and rewards excellence in the originality and communication of civil engineering ideas and research. Entrants can submit papers on any topic related to civil engineering.  Entries should be based on the applicant’s own work and can be adapted from undergraduate research papers, university projects, professional development or professional review reports.

Congratulations to our 2012/13 winning entries:

Kent & East Sussex Branch - Natalie Veale - Is a Super Sewer beneath the River Thames (London) the correct Engineering solution? Or is this a Victorian solution to a modern problem?

South Branch - Alan Faherty – Brighton and Hove Wastewater Treatment Scheme

Thames Valley Branch - Raisa Ehsan - A Study of Geotechnical Constitutive Models using PLAXIS 2D

The competition will be open for entries again in late 2013.

My Experience: Entering the Papers Competition

G&S Competitions

The G&S Papers Competition was very useful practise for professional review and a career in Civil Engineering. Presenting a paper and defending the content is a skill which is not often practised through University and early stages of ones career. It is a vital part of an engineer’s job to research, present and defend an idea. Anyone who doesn’t take this opportunity to practise will wish they had when asked by an employer to do it for real!
