Brunel the Bear has now passed through the South West on his Big Journey. You can read all about it, including how to donate to the supported engineering charities, below. It's all for a good cause!
Brunel the Bear (http://www.brunelthebear.org.uk/) is a well dressed toy bear named after the inspiring Victorian Civil Engineer. He is a mascot for ICE members who support and promote charities that use engineering knowledge and skills to make life better for people and communities around the world.
On 9th April 2011, Brunel the Bear set off from ICE Headquarters in Westminster, London on a sponsored tour of the United Kingdom.
Brunel is now visiting ICE regions, moving between engineering landmarks in a giant relay. Each 'relay leg' must be completed under human power or by non-fossil fuel powered methods. The aim of the Big Journey is to raise £50,000 for engineering charities and to increase public awareness of Civil Engineering and ICE. The charities supported include EWB-UK (Engineers Without Borders UK), EAP (Engineers Against Poverty), RedR, EfOD (Engineers for Overseas Development) and the ICE Benevolent Fund.
Our challenge in the South West was to get Brunel the Bear from Poole, where he arrived on 24th April, to Wales by 8th May.
Our cuddly visitor was treated to a whole host of activities by our graduates and students, including cycling, walking, sailing, a trek through Box Tunnel at night and a climb up over the Severn Bridge.
Thanks to all those who took part, and please feel free to visit http://www.brunelthebear.org.uk/#charities where you will find a link to donate towards the bottom of the page.
