ICE South West Civil Engineering Project of the Year Award

The ICE South West Civil Engineering Project of the Year Award, formerly known as the Merit Award, will be awarded at the ICE SW Annual Dinner on Friday 22 June 2012.

The objective of the Award is to recognise construction projects of particular merit, physical achievement, innovation or ingenuity, which promote the excellence of the engineering profession and have been completed in the last calendar year (2011) within the South West area.

ICE South West Communications Competition

Few engineers today can progress in their careers without mastering the skills of communication and public involvement. The ICE Communications Competition offers a large number of young engineers the opportunity to develop their communications skills in role play public consultation scenarios based around mock engineering scheme proposals.

How to enter
Submit the entry form and return to the South West Regional Office by
Wednesday 01 February 2012.


The South West Regional Communications Competition will take place on Tuesday 13 March 2012 at The University of Plymouth, hosted by ICE Plymouth.

The winning Regional Team will receive a prize of £200 and a certificate presented at the ICE South West Annual Dinner & Awards by ICE President Richard Coackley.

ICE South West Graduate and Student Papers Competition

The 2012 ICE South West Regional Graduate and Student Papers Competition is open to all current graduate and student members of the Institution of Civil Engineers who live, work or study in the South West region. This is a key opportunity for all graduate and student members to develop their writing and presentation skills.

How to enter
Submit application form ICE 3159 (download available below), together with a synopsis of your paper, to the Regional Director, ICE South West, Unit 309, Tamar Science Park, Davy Road, Plymouth, PL6 8BX by 20 January 2012. A shortlisting process will then take place and if your paper has been chosen to go forward to the regional final you will be contacted directly by a member of the South West RST with regards to providing a copy of your full length paper.

A total of three regional finalists will be invited to present their papers and participate in an audience debate at The Castle Hotel in Taunton on 6 March 2012.

The winner will receive £200 and a certificate. The certificate will be presented by ICE President Richard Coackley at the ICE SW Annual Dinner on 22 June 2012 (a free ticket to the event will be given as an additional prize). An abridged version of the winning paper will also be included in the next edition of the ICE SW regional magazine Fulcrum, due to be published in Autumn 2012.

Second place will be awarded £100 and a certificate. Third place will receive £50 and a certificate.
