Communications Competition

The ICE Graduate and Student Communication Competition is held every year to promote and reward excellence in communication.

The West Midlands round of the competition takes place on 6 March 2012 at  Amey Offices, Colmore Plaza, Birmingham, B4 6AT

Mastering the skills of communication and public involvement makes the difference between a successful project and one that doesn’t start at all! The competition replicates a Public Inquiry with each team having chosen an outline scenario which they then work up into more detail to present to ‘the public’. Competitors produce consultation strategies, leaflets and public consultation presentations for their chosen engineering scenario. The winning team goes on to compete in the semi-final and potentially the national final.

The competition is open to teams of current ICE Graduate and Student members with up to 7 years industry experience.  Teams must be made up of four people, except where a team has a single Student member when a team of five will be allowed. Student teams are very welcome made up of Student members from one or more Universities.

Teams will choose one of four pre-prepared engineering scenarios (available below) and will then:

  • prepare a consultation strategy
  • produce a public information leaflet
  • make a 20 minute presentation to an audience (which will include the judges) and then deal with questions at a role-play ‘public consultation’.

The WM winning team will expected to compete in the Semi-finals in April 2012 and, if successful again, the National Final in May 2012.

Members are also invited to attend the competition as a ‘member of the public’ within the audience. This provides attendees with an interesting insight into public consultations and will allow members to pose questions to the presenting teams.
